Blog Post #3

There is a lot of material that I have learned, which will be helpful in the real world. However, one of the main concepts that we learned that will be helpful in the real world would be misleading graphs. As Miss P even stated in the beginning of the unit, misleading graphs are presented all the time, which is why it’s very imperative and helpful that we know and understand how to differentiate between the two. Companies and people can display misleading graphs all the time to skew people’s perception of the content. I enjoyed learning about misleading graphs because it is not only useful, but it was also very interesting. Another thing I enjoyed learning about was SOFA. I enjoyed learning about SOFA because it was easier to comprehend and having specific “steps” to follow made the process much quicker. I also believe that statistics is a good class to take because anyone who is going into the science field, must take statistics. Science is a field many typically tend to go into as well. It’s also a beneficial class to take because its core values are based in useful concepts such as: mean, standard deviation, outliers, area and other similar significant aspects. Some problems even closely reflect SAT questions, which is always helpful! If I could go back in time I would tell myself how many “vocab” terms, there are. I knew from the first-class, that this class was going to be “note-heavy”, but I didn’t realize how many “vocab” terms there were going to be.

I do believe that I have grown as a student and learner this year tremendously. This class was my only level two class, however it still provided me with challenges. I think that the class is very engaging, however in my opinion the labs aren’t engaging especially when you have to do it with all of the class and their data. One song I would give this class would be “let me down slowly” because too many people disrespect Miss P and don’t care about their grade or work, which upsets me.

Stat Olympics: Penny Pick Up Game

2)
Stat Olympics is a game every stat class plays for a span of around three days. Each class is split up into six different groups of five people. Then each group decides on an “event” or “game” to be responsible for. For example, my group created the “Penny Pick Up” game. So then two people stayed at our game to guide the other olympians through, while the other three members went around to participate in the other events by our class. Our “Penny Pick Up” game consisted of about twenty pennies on a table and then a cup on a desk a foot from the table. Each participant stood in between the table and the desk and picked up as many pennies as they could one at a time, without sliding them, and then placing them in the cup, in fifteen seconds. Two trials were conducted, and nothing specifically needed to change when trying to implement our event.

5 Number Summary:
Minimum = 1.5
Q1 = 7
Median = 7.5
Q3 = 8.5
Maximum = 10.5

Mean = 7.18
SD = 7.5

Since our data is skewed left, we use the five number summary. We use the five number summary because our data is not symmetric so our mean and median are not the same.

4)

Empirical Rule Percentages:

1SD = 68%
2SD = 95%
3SD = 99.7%

Our Percentages:
1SD = 73%
2SD = 97%
3SD = 100%

Our data was normally distributed because our percentages were very close to the empirical rule percentages. We were only off by one or two typically.

Yes I did like the project as a whole. It was a nice break from the every day school day. Participating in each event was definitely a lot of fun too because each event was unique in its own way. I also learned a lot about statistical methods during the project. One of the biggest things I learned was how you can compare an experiment that you conduct to the “normal” percentages. I also really enjoyed seeing everything put together: stem plot, box plot, normal curve, histogram, empirical rule, data list, z-score, 5 number summary, and the five number summary explanation. Lastly, this project further expressed how all of these statistical components are and can be used in every day life and or in something as simple as a game.
